Uphill...Both Ways

"Back in my day, we had to walk to school...barefoot...in the snow...Uphill...Both Ways!" We've all laughed at the old unbelievable rejoinder - and no one did it better than Tim Brooke-Taylor, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and Marty Feldman a half-century ago.

Watching that sketch got me thinking. How would I tell my future grandchildren about my time as a school board member in Hillsborough Township? Would they even believe it? Perhaps I would begin like this:

"Back in my day you had to be elected to the school board...and I was...five consecutive times...for a total of 15 years, 8 months and 13 days...as a conservative...in deep blue New Jersey." Yeah, right! Tell us another one, Boomer!
The difference is I actually lived it...and believe me, it really was Uphill Both Ways.
Now that I have left the Hillsborough Township Board of Education I am going to spend a year telling you how I did it. I am going to write about some of the decisions I was involved in, how the board works, and all of the frustrations that go along with being a board member - and not just one on the center-right.
I plan to post articles a couple of times a month. Typically on alternate Mondays at 7:30pm - but that can vary. I am not yet sure what I will post in between, but I hope you will join me as we figure this out together, and make that long journey back to school, Uphill Both Ways.
